Lough Neagh System - Moyola River for Trout Fishing and Salmon Fishing
27 Miles, 44km
Moyola Angling Association
Castledawson & Draperstown
The Moyola River stretches for approximately 27 miles from
Lough Neagh into the Sperrin Mountains. Nearest towns are Magherafelt,
Castledawson, Maghera. Methods include fly fishing, trotting worms,
spinning and evening fishing. Throughout its 27 mile length the Moyola
changes from a small river (3-5m) through the majority of its length as
a medium sized river (5-20m) to a large river (20m+) for its last couple
of miles before entering Lough Neagh. Brown Trout provide the bulk of
the sport from April to July to both the dry and wet fly. In June Dollaghan
may start to appear and give good sport right to the end of the season.
The night fly fisherman requires a spate to get these fish up from Lough
Neagh and then a period of settled low water conditions. Conversely the
Salmon angler will want a series of spates from late June on to October
to get the best of his fishing with fly, spinner, and worm. Occasional
Sea Trout also turn up during this time. A Ghillie service at £50/day
is available given prior notice.
