The Foyle System - River Mourne
8 miles, 13 km
Sion Mills Angling Club
Strabane, Sion Mills, Victoria Bridge, County Londonderry
The River Mourne is situated off the A5, between Strabane
and Newtownstewart. Nearest towns are Sion Mills, Clady, Strabane, Castlederg
and Newtownstewart. The Mourne is a big river (20m +) and although it
has a good population of Brown Trout, (5lb +) the main quarries are Salmon,
Grilse and Sea Trout.
Spring Salmon are best from April to mid May with the bulk
of the Grilse and summer Salmon arriving from June to the end of the season
in October. Sea Trout are at their peak in June and July.
There is great fly water on this stretch but spinning and
worming are also popular. This part of the river does not necessarily
require a spate and in fact will generally fish better in lower water
conditions. A Ghillie service at £50/ day is available with prior
notice.
