Routes for Northern Ireland Cycling Holidays

Circular Route 1 "The Sperrin Sprint"
A scenic and wonderfully quiet route though the Sperrins. From Cookstown, which has the widest main street in Ireland, take the B162 turning off to the left to pass Lough Fea. Joining the B47 along the Glenelly Valley brings you into the heart of the Sperrin Mountains. This section has the remotest feeling to it as you travel along the valley. The Sperrin Heritage Centre is an ideal rest point situated below Sawel Mountain and with its excellent teashop and home made scones – you can even try your hand at Gold Panning here.

At Oughtboy Bridge (just before Cranagh) cross to a minor road and follow the river along its south bank until a T – Junction signposted Plumbridge to the right and Gortin to the left. Take a left here then next left following the National Cycle Network signs (95) to a junction where route 95 is signposted Cookstown to the left. A short detour to the right will bring you into the scenic village of Gortin.

Follow Route 95 along the valley above the Owenkillew River eastwards passing Glenhull and descending in the wider valley of the Ballinderry River. A Short detour to the left is signposted to the Beaghmore stone circles. The route continues back into Cookstown.

Recommended are off-circuit trips to the pretty village of Plumbridge and down to Gortin Glen and the Ulster American Folk Park beyond. Wellbrook Beetling Mill provides an insight into just how hard it was to make genuine Irish linen in the old days.
